Hitting
My Hitting philosophy is simple: If it is comfortable and it works go with it. I was a pitcher in college. I didn't pick up a bat for four years and my Senior year I was able to put up good enough numbers to sign a professional contract. After my first Professional season, I incorporated the drills that I had learned and jumped from 1 Home Run in 2002, to 12 Home Runs in 2003. I found my comfort zone and used my hitting maintenance program to stay consistent. I incorporate drills that were successful during my professional career.
Hitting Philosophy:
Mind set, Confidence, before you even hit the box, you need to believe you can succeed. "If you believe you can you can, if you believe you can't you're right."
1. Stance-feet a little past shoulder width apart and the knees are slightly bent,
for balance. Example, jump up and then land in a bent knee balanced position
2. Hands-should be ear heighth, and your grip should be relaxed, like you are
playing the flute or door knocking knuckles. Head toward the pitcher, watching
the baseball, you can't hit what you can't see
Steps of hitting:
1. Motion- it's easier to hit w/ motion, than from a dead stand still (rhythm)
2. Load-weight transfer to back leg, inertia this is the beginning of the swing
3. Vaccuum, or coil/stride (launch, this creates more power and puts hitter in a good position to hit (hitting is individual up to this point, every good hitter is in this position before contact, how they get there is individual
4. Swing to follow through-this is squish the bug, palm up/palm down hands inside the baseball to and through contact w/ extension after contact and then follow through and finish high and balanced with head on baseball.
5. 10 feet out-when the baseball is 10ft out from homeplate all good hitters are in the same position, with front foot down and ready to hit.
6. Stay relaxed, focused, positive and confident. Work on the process, build a routine, work on something everyday and try to get better everyday. Work hard and Evaluate your performance
Where should I try to hit the ball?
Always approach the inside & top part of the baseball. This will help keep your bat on the correct swing plane and help you hit the ball where it is supposed to be hit. If it's inside you'll pull the ball, and if it's away, you'll hit the ball to the opposite field.
With this approach, you'll hit a lot more line drives and groundballs - instead of line drives and fly balls. If your focus is to try to hit homeruns you will contact the bottom of the ball and hit a lot of pop ups and flyballs.
Important! Make sure when you make contact that you have your top hand palm facing the sky! Remember "Palm up, Palm down." This ensures you are maintaining a level swing which will produce more line drives and hard ground balls.
How can I increase my batting average?
Try to hit the ball through the fence, instead of over the fence. A good point of reference is that where ever the ball comes from, the ball should go back to. You should always work line drives to down instead of line drive to up. You need to understand that 80% of the balls hit into the air are outs.
